The coastal area of Ecuador was affected by a telluric event of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale on April 16, 2016, this event caused the lack of control and construction errors in certain buildings to become evident, as an example of this confirmed the presence of the short column effect in some buildings of the so-called zero zone in Portoviejo. This pathology had a notable incidence on the damage and collapse of many structures in this sector; In a detailed analysis, it was found that the traditional form of construction and bracing of structures opens up the formation and presence of the short column effect in the foundation area; which is generally not designed to withstand this type of stress. Through mathematical models, several results were obtained that are highly interesting for the formation of construction criteria.
