AI Policy
SIJIS has adopted a specific Artificial Intelligence Policy for new submissions. This policy is consistent with the Committee on Publication Ethics (C.O.P.E) position on AI.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): Articles submitted to Sapienza must be created solely by the authors and not the product of AI tools, unless appropriate to the research question and properly cited and justified.
Policy Highlights
- AI tools cannot be listed as an author of a paper.
- AI tools cannot be used as the main source in reviewing a paper.
- Use of AI tools is only allowed to support the following activities: Spelling, Grammar, Data Collection/Analysis.
Submissions: Authors must be transparent about any AI use, disclosing it in the Information Document and in the methods section of the paper. This requirement is mandatory for submissions from September 2025.
This policy may evolve further as we work with our publishing partners to understand how emerging technologies can help or hinder the process of preparing research for publication.
The Editorial Team recognizes the value of large language models (LLMs) (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, etc.) and generative AI as productivity tools that can assist authors in preparing their articles for submission, generating initial ideas for structure, summarizing, paraphrasing, polishing language, etc.
However, it is essential to note that all language models have limitations and cannot replicate human creative and critical thinking. Human intervention with these tools is necessary to ensure that the content presented is accurate and appropriate to the reader. Therefore, Sapienza requires authors and reviewers to be aware of the limitations of language models when submitting or reviewing for the journal.
